Through technological development, the world has been turned into a global village that associates and interrelates. These developments have helped eradicate ignorance. But unfortunately, it has also created keyboard warriors who pay little relevance for common courtesy or respect for others.
One of the major connectors to the world is social media. It has been utilized over years as means of communication, education, entertainment, and employment. Although the value of social media surpasses expectations their few instances in which it is abused.
A major concern of social media is the constant abuses that arise from its use. Over the years social media has turned violent and offensive to different individuals causing untold worth damages. There have been cases of bullying, racism, intolerance, sexual persuasion, nudity, and most of all political intolerance. These vices seem to fuel anger and endanger young ones.
Although the benefits of social media are unquestionable, we must assess what is changed out and ensure constant safety for the young. In the recent past, there have been several cases of suicide deaths due to social media attacks and defaming. Although these attacks are not physical they tend to destroy individuals' self-worth.
The mental health of an individual is often associated with the kind of output that one receives from the society around them. Unfortunately in today's society social media is the main society we associate with. Therefore when cruelty is used we lose more than we can gain. It was always claimed that "Sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never harm me" although true it does not often apply to all.
Let's place caution in our day-to-day encounters online. Also, parents should try and assess their children's social media encounters. Be aware of the challenges.
