Was it courage or just plain stupidity
Growing up one of the main things all children wanted to outline was how brave they were. These were the ages when gang mentality was the order of the day. Yes, the majority of children believe that they had to show how brave they were. although the show of courage was an important aspect most of the things we did to show how brave we were often more dangerous than brave.
For instance, we all knew that superman was a figment of someone's imagination. Yes, superman was one of the 80's biggest shows. The flight and the fights all made everyone feel they deserved to fly. Unfortunately, a major part of growing up at that age involves stunts and shenanigans by many children.
One of the worst cases of Superman shenanigans happened along the playground. the boys decided that they would get a red cape and the strongest would fly off a tractor. Cheered on by the rest one boy tacked in his shirt pulled his cap aside and jumped to his flight.
Yes, he flew straight to the ground. Rather than the adventure of superman, this felt more like tom and Jerry flattening on the ground. Unfortunately, tom would have only needed to be blown up to survive. This was nothing like that. We went ahead to pick up our friend who by now was no longer excited but screaming in pain. The best thing was we all had ideas on how to heal his booboos. In the versions and excuses of first aid, we wiped him up and feed him as many sweets as possible, and saw him off. The only worry we all had was his parent noticing he was in pain. This is because his parent's knowledge meant that our parents would be aware.
A week later we finally met our homegrown superman. His injuries were minor but the impact of the fall was mostly a beating. His experience alone created a plan for the next adventure. Fortunately, it involved less height but more animals.
Looking back at the things we did as children I realize my parent were glad we survived each year. As we face our children today and ask them to run out and play please remember what little you did as you promote the rules of play.
Remember nothing in life is risk-free.
