Looking at my own experience I remember being a brother's keeper but not necessarily by choice but for the fact that it was instilled in me that I had to answer to it. Now can I still say I am my brother's keeper? that's a question that may not easily be answered. Society was created as a self-reliant system of working. We all believe that we're individual floating islands. But the true description is floating bottle raft. We walk around in sinking sand creating mud paddles to sink in.
I remember being an 11-year-old girl who lost her little brother. I was so scared that my brother had been dayad(kidnaped) that I packed my little bag and did a fundraiser for my next meal. As an 11-year-old, I was very aware that my brother was my responsibility. Well unfortunately my fundraising effort raised me 10 shillings and 4 chiclets. Although little it was the best thought to plan out of fear that my life was in danger. Well, this escape plan was flouted by the early appearance of my father. At the same time, my missing brother began snoring under the dining table. Just that one experience made me realize that being aware of those around you can save you from being a wandering Cain.
Truth be told the disconnect that we face in society is a personal responsibility. My role is to remember that I should create a better society that my children would enjoy and exist effectively. My children are not only my blood but future Kenyans born to live in my country. Therefore I am my brother's keeper if I create an environment for growth rather than mud.
