How Millennial Mums Can Talk Periods with Preteen Girls
Honestly, many of us didn’t grow up having warm or open conversations about periods. It was awkward. Whispered. Maybe even scary. But as millennial mums, we get to do it differently—we get to break that silence with grace, honesty, and a little love.
Talking to your preteen daughter about her period doesn’t have to be a big “sit-down” moment. In fact, it’s often better when it feels like a normal part of life. Start by keeping the tone light and positive. Normalize the conversation early—even before her first period. Mention your own experiences, answer her questions openly, and remind her that there’s nothing weird or shameful about it.
Get her a cute period kit—a pouch with pads, wipes, a spare pair of underwear, and maybe even a little note. Make it feel like a celebration, not a crisis. Teach her how to use pads (you’d be surprised how many girls panic their first time) and reassure her that leaks and accidents are normal, not failures.
Most importantly, remind her that her body is smart, beautiful, and doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. She’s not “becoming a woman” in a scary way—she’s just growing, evolving, and learning to care for herself.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just have to be present, kind, and willing to talk. That alone will mean the world to her.
